Folic acid during pregnancy

Like many other discoveries, this was done almost by accident. In 1932, the English physician Wils noted that some women in the treatment of anemia are assisted by a crude liver extract. Later, the component found in it was also found in the leaves of parsley and spinach, resulting in a new vitamin B group called folic acid (from the Latin folium, that is, “leaf”).

It was also found out that in the body of a healthy person contains from 5 to 20 mg of vitamin B9, and half of it is concentrated in the liver. And this stock must be constantly replenished. And it is especially important to do this during the period of bearing the baby because the deficiency of this substance is extremely dangerous for actively multiplying cells.

Folic acid is essential for the growth and proper development of all organs and tissues of the unborn child, especially in the very beginning of pregnancy. After the second week after conception, the part of the embryo is determined from which the brain will subsequently develop, which means that even a short-term vitamin B9 deficiency can lead to defects in the development of the fetal nervous system. In addition, folic acid is used by the body to update cells, form blood cells, participate in the exchange of serotonin and adrenaline, thus providing a good mood, and stimulates appetite at the sight of food, helping to produce hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

Vitamin B9 during pregnancy

Gynecologists prescribe vitamin B9 to all future mothers, noting that it is desirable to start taking it before conception. Deficiency of this element is likely to have the most harmful effect on the development of the fetus: lead to the absence of the brain, hydrocephalus, the formation of cerebral hernias, spina bifida, defects in the cardiovascular system, partial placental abruption, miscarriages and many other negative consequences. However, if a woman approaches the process of procreation consciously and starts taking folic acid preparations several months before pregnancy, or at least immediately after her onset, about 75% of the above problems will be avoided.

In the period of breastfeeding, the need for vitamin B9 is great for both mother and baby. To a woman, he helps overcome postpartum depression, apathy, weakness, and a decrease in the amount of milk. Babies who do not suffer from a deficiency in folic acid have no weight loss, delayed psychomotor development, decreased immunity, impaired intestinal function.
