Acute birth control pills have also been called “day-after-pills” and are an emergency solution to prevent unwanted pregnancy after unprotected intercourse.
The acute p-pill contains a high dose of a carotid hormone, levonorgestrel and, if taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, can prevent pregnancy. It can be used if you are afraid of getting pregnant because of an unprotected intercourse, whether the condom has broken or if you missed any birth control pills.
How safe are “day-after-pills”?
Acute birth control pills prevent around 85 percent of pregnancies, but the method is not as safe as when using regular birth control pills.
How does emergency contraception work?
The hormone contained in the pill prevents or retards ovulation, which means that a fertilization cannot occur. However, the method has no effect if ovulation or fertilization has already taken place.
How do you get acute birth control?
The tablets are prescription free and can be purchased at Apoteket. For young people, emergency pills can be obtained free of charge at youth receptions, maternity care centers, and other contraceptives.
What acute birth control pills are there?
There are two different types of acute birth control pills. A kind of pill that can take up to 72 hours (three days) after unprotected intercourse and a kind of pill that can take up to 120 hours (five days) after an unprotected intercourse. The latter variety is a bit safer than the first one.
Regardless of what kind of acute birth control pills you choose, take the tablet as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. The earlier you take it, the less is the risk of getting pregnant.
Both types can be bought at the pharmacy free of charge. You can also get help at a youth reception, midwife reception, health center, benefit reception or a sex and social gathering. If you are young, you may be able to receive emergency pills for free at a youth reception.
When taking an emergency pill it is common for people to come either sooner or later than expected. It is common to have hemorrhaged. Whether you are waiting for a while or not, you should always make a pregnancy test after three to four weeks to make sure you have not become pregnant.
